Although most Pharmacognostic studies focus on plants and medicines derived from plants, other types of organisms are also regarded as pharmacognostically interesting, in particular, various types of microbes (bacteria, fungi, etc.) and recently various marine organisms.

The core competence areas under Pharmacognosy are Herbal drug standardization, Development of Nano-herbal formulation, Medicinal Plant Tissue Culture, Evaluation of traditional herbal formulation, Isolation and purification of phytoconstituents, development of and nutraceuticals.

The department has a well planted Pharmacognostic Medicinal Garden.

The broad spectrum Pharmacognosy subjects involved are:

  • Medicinal Ethnobotony
  • Phytochemistry
  • Marine Pharmacognosy
  • Herbal Medicines
  • Biodiversity of Plants
